Part volcanology research, part performance art, in 2010 & 2011, the Syracuse Lava Project melted rock in a gas fired tilt furnace in order to study how lava flows and solidifies into rock- as well as to create a mesmerizing video. It turns out lava will flow over the top of ice for some distance on a cushion of water vapor before melting through the solid ice. Watch!
